{NA Review} Escape in You by Rachel Schurig

Jet Taylor is the quintessential bad boy. A womanizer. A fighter. Dangerous. The type of guy most girls do their best to avoid. But Zoe Janes is no saint herself. In fact, she sees in Jet the perfect opportunity to distract herself from her responsibilities at home and the mistakes that keep her trapped there. He’s gorgeous, likes to party, and is clearly only interested in having fun—just like Zoe.

The more time they spend together, the harder it is for Zoe to stick to her “fun only” mantra. Jet is getting under her skin, making her believe things could actually be different. She knows they’re both trapped by the sins of their past but Jet is starting to make her think freedom might actually be possible.

And that makes him the most dangerous boy of all. (Blurb via Goodreads)

{Review}
"Summer has snuck up on me." (page 1, line 1)
The story is more than a little heartbreaking but it's also beautiful. Jet/Taylor and Zoe both have crappy home lives filled with grief, fear, desperation and guilt. Lives they escape with alcohol. Or drugs. Or sex. Told from both Zoe and Jet's perspectives we get to see the parts of their lives they are so desperate to hide from everyone around them. To see why they are so afraid to let anyone get close. They're trapped and then Jet meets Zoe and suddenly there is someone in their lives who sees too much, who knows what it feels like.

I loved how Schurig showed the burgeoning relationship, the rocky moments, how they try not to get too close, how Jet doesn't want to just jump into bed with Zoe because he wants it to mean something (he really is a sweetie) and how scary it is for both of them when they do get close, when it does mean something, when they start to lean on each other.
"I called you because tonight really, really, sucked. And all I could think about was getting out of there. And when I thought about where I should go, where I would go if I could go anywhere, I thought of you." (location 1357)
Though there were a few NA cliches, there isn't a cliffhanger (yea!) but I'm hoping to see these characters again, maybe we'll get to see Ellie's story or Fred's...
