{Blog Tour + Excerpt + Review + Giveaway} When Good Earls Go Bad (Dukes Behaving Badly # 1.5) by Megan Frampton

When Good Earls Go Bad:
A Victorian Valentine’s Day Novella
Dukes Behaving Badly # 1.5
By: Megan Frampton
Releasing February 3rd, 2015
Avon Impulse

Megan Frampton’s Dukes Behaving Badly series is back, though this time it’s an earl who’s meeting his match in this delightfully fun and sexy novella!

What’s a lovely young woman doing asleep in his bed? Matthew, Earl of Selkirk, is shocked to discover it’s his new housekeeper! She’s a far cry from the gray-haired woman he expected. Matthew is no fan of surprises, and Annabelle Tyne is pure temptation. Perhaps he shouldn’t have had her hired sight unseen.

Annabelle, co-owner of the Quality Employment Agency, is no housekeeper, but she wasn’t about to lose a potential client simply because there was no one to fit the bill. Imagine her shock when the Earl arrives at his London townhome and she’s awoken in the night by the most attractive man she’s ever seen.

Matthew is a man who lives life by the rules, but sometimes rules are made to be broken…and being bad can be very, very good.

Excerpt: (love this part of the book!)
She couldn’t laugh. Even though she really, really wanted to, just for the sheer ridiculousness of it—him sitting over there, all confused and gorgeous and proper, asking her to “explore an attraction,” as though it were an exhibit at a museum.
But she knew if she did laugh, even for the right reasons, his lovely mouth would thin out into a hard line and he would close off and be buttoned up for the rest of the month, and she didn’t want that to happen, not at all.
What she wanted was for him to stand up, grab her, and pull her to him, putting his mouth to hers in a ferocious, claiming kiss.
But he was far too polite to do that. At least not until she’d told him she wanted it. That. Him. And she hadn’t told him anything, not yet, even though his question hung in the air like the recently banished dust she’d raised while cleaning the house.
And like the dust, she needed to address it. Only she wouldn’t be using her feather duster in this case.
Unless . . . ?
I would, my lord. Matthew,” she amended, smiling as she glimpsed the quick spark of desire that lit his eyes before he glanced away. Was her Scottish earl shy, then?
He hadn’t seemed so, but then again, he’d seemed altogether too brusque and remote when she’d first met him. Maybe he was hiding shyness under all that. Maybe he differed from the British aristocracy in his . . . well, in other things, as well. Because she hadn’t noticed him looking at all the women as they’d walked down the street or been in the tavern. He’d just looked at her.
And didn’t that give her a delicious feeling!
A feeling she’d never had, not even when she’d thought she was in love, long before she’d fallen. It all had to do with him.
“Yes,” she said, to clarify. “I absolutely would.”
Good,” he said.
Matthew,” she said as she flattened her palm against his chest, feeling the hard planes of his skin underneath his clothes. Goodness. What did Scottish earls do to get so fit? She’d have to ask him. Only not now, not when he was clearly so . . . so shy about all of this. He might just bolt, and then she’d never get to touch that bare chest for herself.
And she had every intention of doing so, all in the name of exploration, of course.
Yes, er, Annabelle?” His eyes had darkened, so dark they were nearly black, and suddenly it didn’t feel as though she were the one in control. His eyes, the dark passion she saw there, made her mouth dry and a slow, sensual shiver run through her body.
Oh, this was going to be wonderful. Even though it might mean that it ruined her for the rest of her life. Because she could already tell that this man, whether he was Scottish, an earl, a burnt-toast lover, and so much more, was someone she could fall in love with. Even though there would only be that afterward, no promise of anything more. Not that she needed anything more.
She just needed him. Right now.
Shall we go upstairs?” Her voice sounded lower, softer, and she could have sworn he shook as she spoke.
Yes, we should.” He rose, her hand dropping to the table, but before she could stand as well he had picked her up out of the chair and held her, high against his chest, his wonderful, hard, gorgeous chest, those dark eyes seeming to burn right through her.
She squeaked in surprise as he strode to the staircase, his steps as sure and strong as though she weighed as little as a piece of paper. Or a speck of dust.

"While it's not precisely true that nobody is here, because I am, in fact, here, the truth is that there is no one here who can accommodate the request." (page 1, line 1)
A cute and sweet story, perfect for a quick pick-me-up.

Annabelle is a charming heroine. She's loving, finds joy in the smallest of things, she sees the best in everyone, is honest, direct, flighty, full of rambling explanations, and definitely not a housekeeper as she mentions once or a hundred times. She's been hurt before by someone she trusted and I so wanted her to get her happily ever after.

Matthew is logical. He knows exactly how he wants things. He's planned his whole life down to the type of woman he thinks he wants - and that woman is nothing like Annabelle. Annabelle turns his life upside down, opening him to new experiences - some very unexpected - and to emotions.

I loved Annabelle and Matthew together. They balance each other, Matthew's logic and Annabelle's playfulness. Annabelle helps Matthew remember fun and happiness while Matthew is the kind of man she can trust, he respects her, listens to her - even when she does her Annabelle rambling - and values her opinion.

Megan Frampton's writing style is quite chatty and sometimes silly, something I very much enjoyed. I was charmed by her characters and look forward to reading the next installment in the Dukes Behaving Badly series.

{Romance Novella Review} Brave by Zoe Dawson

{Romance Novella Review} Brave by Zoe Dawson

Brave (The 12 NA's of Christmas)
In the season of hope, in the season of giving…

How far would you go for your friend?

Alissa Thompson has been the good girl her whole life. Her uninterested parents don’t understand her hopes and dreams. But this Christmas when her steadfast childhood friend Charlie needs her more than ever, she can’t back down. Crossing the line means being braver than she has ever been in her life. It means changing and growing and taking a stand.

Dakota Gray was brave in the face of debilitating fear. But he lost himself in that blood soaked day and has shunned everything he once knew. Now shattered and broken, he hides out in isolation, his wounds beyond healing. His heart closed, his emotions buried, he’s a man on the edge of self-destructing. Little does he know that courage would be found in another searching for the strength to be brave.

Now snowbound in the Colorado Rockies one week before Christmas, Alissa thought this was about her journey and her friend, about setting him free. But from the moment she meets Dakota, she learns about what real bravery is all about. What real love is all about. But is the season enough, her courage enough, her love enough to heal this hero’s brave heart and in the end set herself free? (Blurb via Goodreads)

"Sweat rolled down my back and off my arms." (page 1, line 1)
Brave is a surprisingly heavy read and packs quite a punch in only 119 pages. Alissa and Dakota have been through a lot, things Dawson hints about but you have to keep reading to find out exactly what haunts them.

Brave is told from both Alissa and Dakota's points of view - I'm a big fan of dual POVs - we see Alissa on a quest for her best friend and Dakota who is hiding out in the mountains and comes to Alissa's rescue. They are both suffering, both weighed down with guilt and grief, and together they begin to find a way to move on.
"I made it so you wouldn't feel hopeless. I know what that feels like, and it's the worst feeling on earth. I didn't want you to feel that way, ever." (location 1034)
I liked how Dawson showed the different kinds of brave, emotionally and physically, and how sometimes you are being brave just getting through the day.
"I told you I'm no hero, Alissa. I'm just a man...just a man."
"I know you are a man. You are so, so...brave."
"Brave? Do you really think so?"
"Yes, and you taught me how to be brave." (location 1155)
I did think the end was kind of rushed, a lot of big things happened (and yea for therapy! That's another kind of brave, seeking help), but I was happy to see everything tied up, to see how far both Alissa and Dakota have come.

"All of my senses engage as I wait in line and stare through the clear glass - the fragrance in the air from the foil wrapped treats wafts under my nose, the beauty of the lines of shelves decorated with tiny dots and colored sprinkles mesmerizes me, and the anticipation of the taste makes my mouth water." (page 1, line 1)
I struggled with liking/connecting with Aerie (though I love the name!). She was cold and detached and doesn't let anyone get close to her. As I learned more about Aerie's past and experiences I came to understand her and why she is the way she is. I started to root for her and hope for her happily-ever-after.
I liked Jagger though he did seem a bit over the top, a male model, an actor, but he was sweet and genuine, patient and understanding. He's a good guy who encourages Aerie to test her boundaries, to be brave, to open up.

I liked the cute meet, the fun, flirty beginning to their relationship and 'Alice'. I do wish that when things got complicated between them that they had talked about things but I understand why it's so hard for her to trust, to give someone a chance.

If you're looking for a quick story with a steamy relationship give Dazed a try (and don't worry if you haven't read anything else in the Connections series, it can stand alone).

"Erin, please don't go in there." (page 1, line 1)
An exciting, sexy read. A serious alpha male with a checkered past. A brave, determined heroine. I really enjoyed this novella, the characters were interesting - and likeable, the storyline was exciting and a little bit heartbreaking. Despite being a short read Ivan and Erin were well rounded characters, they had amazing chemistry and their romance was hot and sweet and believable. I look forward to reading more from Roxie Rivera.

{NA Novella Review} Elevator Heat by B.D. Rowe

Twenty-year-old Maddie has had a crush on Colin, her studly internship supervisor, for three long months. She struggles focusing on her work, and always finds herself gazing at his wavy brown hair, his chiseled cheekbones, his kissable lips. Little does she know, however, that he has feelings for her, too.

The problem is no matter how much time they spend together in the office, neither one can ever make the first move.

That is, until they both step into the old, rickety elevator late one Friday night.

And things start to get a little steamy...

"The girl had no idea that in less than three minutes all her dreams would come true." (page 1, line 1)
They've been pining for each other for months. There are lots of covert glances and unspoken fantasies but their interactions are limited to business. But then, one night they get in the elevator ... and can't get out.

The characters are interesting but I would have appreciated a bit more character development.  Colin is a good guy, especially in the elevator, trying to be calm and strong for Maddie who is freaking out. Though he cares very much for Maddie Colin has suffered a terrible loss and is afraid to move on, afraid to make a move.

It was a very fast read and I loved the ending!

{Romance Novella Reviews} Love on Main Street

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18660883-love-on-main-street?from_search=true

Where love begins on Main Street and ends happily ever after....

Christmas, the most magical season, is almost upon the small mountain town of Snow Creek. For seven couples, holiday wishes mean more than just gifts or parties. Can Snow Creek pull off its annual holiday miracle of bringing love to town?

Featuring seven original romances by New York Times and bestselling authors…

Juliet Blackwell
LGC Smith
Cecilia Gray
Adrienne Bell
Rachel Herron
Ruby Laska
Lisa Hughey

QUEEN OF HEARTS BY JULIET BLACKWELL
Serafina Rogers is not an impulsive person, but lately something’s gotten into her. She walked away from warm San Diego, her scumbag ex-fiance, and her teaching job in order to come to Snow Creek and take over her deceased aunt’s witchy supply store. Unfortunately, her hunky cowboy landlord, Joe, has other plans for the space, which hasn’t turned a profit in years. Neither Joe nor Serafina believe in magic, much less romance. But when a Yule log is tossed on the fire, Serafina begins seeing things in her aunt’s deck of cards, and Joe’s niece goes missing…they might just have to change their minds.

THE HOLIDAY SHOW BY LGC SMITH
Christy Monroe hates Christmas. The excess, the inevitable disappointments--bah. Dan Rose loves Christmas. The fun, the way his bakery smells—it’s all a little magical, especially in Snow Creek. When their first-grade daughters decide they want to be sisters, Christy and Dan had better watch out. The girls maneuver their parents into organizing the elementary school holiday show together. It doesn’t take long for Dan to make it his goal to change Christy’s mind about Christmas—and taking a chance again on love.

LET IT SNOW BY CECILIA GRAY
After losing her parents, Jessica can't bear to lose her childhood home and family bookstore, too. When they're taken from her, she has nowhere to go…except the arms of Daniel, Snow Creek's resident hero paramedic. It's not be the Christmas miracle Jessica wanted, but it might the one she needs….

SECOND CHANCES BY ADRIENNE BELL
There’s no doubt in Eileen Ledger’s mind that the last time she saw hockey superstar Paul McAlester she made the biggest mistake of her life. Only, she’s never been sure if the mistake was in kissing him, or in running away. But ten years later, Paul is back in town for Christmas, and Eileen has a second chance to make things right…as long as she can keep herself from falling in love again.

A CHRISTMAST YARN BY RACHAEL HERRON
Knitting has always served as a distraction, something that Clara can hide behind. After a significant weight loss, though, she's still not sure if she wants to be noticed. When sexy Lincoln ends up on the front porch of her yarn store, he seems to see everything clear as day. Will Clara finally be seen for her true self?

MISS BONNY'S BURIED TREASURE BY RUBY LASKA
Caroline Bonny has always known about her family curse: no Bonny daughter will ever marry until her great-great-great-grandfather's buried treasure is found. Caroline has made her peace with her life as a spinster-turned-cosmetologist, until easy-on-the-eyes schoolteacher Lance Carter comes to town determined to drown his recent breakup in holiday festivities.

ONE SILENT NIGHT BY LISA HUGHEY
Nick and Ally Carpenter split up months ago after years of infertility treatments crushed their marriage and their dreams of children. When the couple reunites for the holidays to make a dying woman happy, can an unexpected miracle show them the way back to love or is it too late? (Blurb via Goodreads)

{Review(s)}

Sweet, charming, heartwarming stories that show the spirit of Christmas. All seven stories are tied together with the common thread of Snow Creek, the characters and staples of life in the idyllic town of Snow Creek.

Comments about specific stories:

A Christmast Yarn by Rachael Herron -- I've been a fan of her work, especially because I'm a knitter, a little 'k' knitter that is. I loved this story, sweet Clara who is awkward and unsure and uncomfortable in her new skin, wonderful Lincoln who is adjusting to his changed life. Oh, and here's a hankie alert, I teared up within the first five minutes.

Let It Snow by Cecilia Gray -- I'm also a big fan of Cecilia, both her young adult and adult work. Love and sacrifice and guilt and freedom and an excellent happy ending, I enjoyed this story very much. Oh, and there's a puppy!

{Romance Novella Minute Review} Reforming the Rogue by Donna Lea Simpson

{Romance Novella Minute Review} Reforming the Rogue by Donna Lea Simpson

From the author of A Rogue’s Rescue comes another Classic Regency Romance novella celebrating the witty and romantic world first introduced by Jane Austen.

With nowhere else to go, penniless Linnet Pelham is forced to take refuge with her sister in London, only to learn that her sister’s betrothal to Lord Cairngrove is the scandal of the ton. Never one to shy away from an unpleasant situation and convinced of the couple’s devotion, Linnet is determined to see them wed, if only she can persuade Cairngrove’s brother, Nic Barton.

Nic, a notorious rogue who is all too aware of his dashing good looks, is dead set on preventing his brother’s marriage. Even as he schemes to frighten Linnet’s sister into walking away from the engagement, he sets his sights on seducing the lovely Linnet with whispered promises of lessons in love.

But Linnet has a few lessons of her own to teach, and as the two match wits and spar over their siblings’ fate, the undeniable passion growing between them might force them both to learn the meaning of true love.

This novella was originally published under the title “Love Lessons." (Blurb via Goodreads)

"You cannot marry your whore, Cedric." (page 1, line 1)
There definitely were elements of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, Nic's misconceptions about Linnet, Nic trying to interfere with a relationship, dislike at first sight, reluctant affection.  There wasn't a whole lot of emotional development, nor was there time for much as Nic and Linnet spent as much time involved in their respective siblings' relationship as they did in their own. But we do get not just one, but two happy endings.

{Reviews}

Quick reads that capture the holiday spirit

Dream a Little Dream - 4/5 - a cute story with lots of Christmas themes: second chances, homecomings, forgiveness, getting what you really want. Loved the grand gestures.

Every Year - 4/ 5 - the joy of Christmas, staying up too late working on presents for the kids, being with family, being thankful for each other. Loved the 'every year' tradition. Want to read more about these characters.

Silent Night - 2/5 - spoiler -- leaving her kid? really? Couldn't get into this story.

Have Yourself a Messy Little Christmas - 4/5 - Likable characters, I liked the banter and the chemistry.

A Family for Christmas - 3/5 - I liked Ilena, how strong she is after a horrible loss, how she's ready to jump back in and fall in love. I liked Jared too, but - spoiler - I just didn't see them having a happy life together. Jared had a point, Ilena was willing to move for her husband but not for him. And though she was happy there, he wasn't, he wasn't challenged professionally. And when she meets his family?

{Rating} 3/5 - I liked it

{Review} Full disclosure here: I'm not a sports fan, at least not as a spectator, but I was charmed by the story, even the sports talk. Donovan conveyed Jake's enthusiasm and made me understand why people are so excited about sports. I liked the format, what we got to see of Jake through his blog posts and comments. I would have liked the romance to be more developed but it was still a fast, fun and flirty read.
