Shock.
Then more shock.
And then…aah…Gabriella melted into Zach. After all they had been through together, after everything they had talked about tonight, this was so not the way she envisioned their time together ending.
But she was completely on board with it.
For years she had dreamed about what it would be like for Zach Montgomery to kiss her and now that he was, she needed to stop talking to herself and start enjoying it!
Zach must have realized she was on board because his second crutch fell to the floor as his arms banded around her waist. Everything inside Gabriella melted at the heated contact. He was hard where she was soft and they just…fit. Her hands tentatively stroked their way up his muscular arms and then paused on his shoulders. It felt…naughty…to be touching her boss like this.
Wait…not her boss. Zach. She was touching Zach. Get your head out of the office, girl!
A low hum emanated from Zach and she let her hands slowly glide up the strong column of his throat—and stopped and lingered on his now clean-shaven jaw—and up into his hair. It was longer than he’d ever worn it but it was thick and silky and her fingers just sort of gently grasped and tugged to hold him to her.
If possible, Zach moved in even closer and Gabriella was thoroughly pressed from head to toe between him and the wall. His lips were devouring her but his arms stayed as they were—tightly banded and holding her close as if he was afraid she’d get away.
Not likely.
Right now, there wasn’t another place on the planet she wanted to be. Which was a bit ironic considering that less than a minute ago she wanted to be anyplace but here! Funny how fast things could change.
She struggled between needing to take a breath and never letting Zach’s lips leave hers again. As if reading her mind, he began to trail kisses along her cheek and her jaw. He nipped at her earlobe and then stopped to simply inhale her.
“Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted to do this?” he growled lowly against her ear.
“Hopefully as long as I’ve wanted you to,” she openly admitted as she rubbed herself against him.
He chuckled softly. “The first time you walked through my door, I wanted to touch you. Kiss you.” His tongue lightly traveled down the side of her neck to her collarbone. “Make love to you.”
Gabriella trembled at his words. How was it possible she didn’t notice that? How had he kept it a secret for so long? And why? It was on the tip of her tongue to ask him, but he raised his head and gave her a very sexy grin before reclaiming her lips. There was no shock this time, just anticipation. Zach’s admission had pretty much done it all for her, she was putty in his hands.
She wanted to move, to get to a place where her back wasn’t pressed against a wall. But again, she didn’t want to stop what Zach was doing long enough to even say anything. Her nails raked his scalp and she felt the growl vibrate through him. She pushed her breasts more firmly against him, and felt his erection nudge her belly.
The wall was just fine.

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan's Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40's to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.
When she's not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, playing way too many games of Scrabble or Solitaire on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 25 years and their two sons in North Carolina.

Grant crossed his arms. “Really? Because I asked around too, and several of our lovely contestants said the ‘wardrobe malfunction’ was that she refused to put on any dress chosen for her. You realize why she wore a FSU shirt, don’t you, Richie. I hate that team. And as for ratings, I don’t give a rat’s—”
“Please, lower your voice. This isn’t as bad as it seems.”
“What did you say to her to make her stay? Don’t give me anymore BS about loopholes in contracts, either.”
Richie pressed his fingertips together thoughtfully. “You say this woman was the love of your life, yet you don’t even realize what she’s doing. I find that difficult to believe.”
“You said she was the love of my life. I told you to let her go.”
“Not going to happen, Grant. Besides, I thought you’d be happy about this turn of events. About what it means for you.”
Grant scowled. “Are you incapable of being direct?”
“Isn’t it obvious, Grant? She’s making what I would call a tremendous effort for you to vote her off. Which means she still has feelings for you.”
“You have a warped sense of reasoning.” She might have feelings for him, but they sure as hell weren’t romantic in any way. What, she was trying to woo him with a sweatshirt that smelled like hot dumpster trash? Richie was crazy.
“She can’t stand to be around you because of all the feelings your presence dredges up. Is that so hard to understand?”
Grant blinked. It actually wasn’t; he could relate. He wished he could turn off the memories her presence provoked in him. “You can’t let her run wild on the set, Richie. She’s making a joke out of your show. Don’t you care about that?”
Richie laughed. “She’s doing exactly what I’d hoped she’d do. The question is, are you going to let her beat you at this game?”
Grant took the seat behind him and leaned on Richie’s desk with his forearms. Of course, she was trying to get voted off the show. She hated his guts, and had an entire decade to let this medley of hatred and anger simmer. This was her loophole. Her way of getting out of the contract.  “You don’t know Chelle. She won’t give up. These tantrums will only get worse.”
“Look,” Richie said with a sympathetic sigh that barely hid his delight. “There’s a fine line between love and hate. Haven’t you ever heard that? She obviously has strong feelings toward you. It’s up to you to change the nature of those feelings.”
Grant wiped a hand down his face. Changing Rochelle’s mind about anything had always been a challenge. But changing her heart? Was that even possible?
“You handled yourself quite well last night,” Richie continued. “Very composed for the situation.”
“Am I just supposed to ignore her behavior? That’s not fair to the other women.”
Richie smirked. “Do you even remember the names of any of the other women?”
            Touché.

About the Author:
Brandi lives in central Pennsylvania with her fur-ball cats (Onyx and Klepto), where she spends most of her time attached to her laptops, reading books, appeasing her sweet tooth, and watching TV for motivation.

Growing up in a haunted house inspired Brandi’s fascination with the paranormal, so it only made sense that she’d write Urban Fantasy books for both teens and adults.

Brandi hasn’t been lucky enough to meet her soul mate (yet), so she writes paranormal tales of those who have. Her stories combine magical elements with real-life issues, strong female characters, semi-old fashioned men and family values, woven together and told from an emotional, first-person perspective. She enjoys writing sweet stories that teach girls it’s okay to speak your mind and be independent, career-driven, and not worry about fitting in to society’s mold.

In addition to the BirthRight Novels, she also has four additional adventures she’ll be writing over the next few years, so stay-tuned.

Steps. Shit, there had to be a dozen of them leading up to the hospital entrance. Coming straight from the funeral, Lieutenant Commander Nick Talley was still in his naval dress uniform. He’d be damned if anyone caught him using the wheelchair access. As he hoisted himself up the steps, one grunt at a time, a SEAL motto ran through his brain—The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday.
Today was proving to be a helluva hard day.
Wiping the sweat off his lip, he took a deep breath and flinched. His ribs were just bruised, but hell, he’d broken bones that hadn't hurt this badly. Plus, he ached in places no one could see. At the top of the steps, he steeled himself for what he'd find inside. The glass doors opened, and the pungent odor of disinfectant hit his nose. He hated hospitals almost as much as gravesites. Did fate have to keep punching him in the balls?
At the Information Desk, a little old lady who resembled his Granny Mo—blue hair and all—was head down in her crossword puzzle. The tag stuck off-kilter to her yellow sweater read: “Hi! I’m Lucille. Can I help you?”
“Excuse me, ma’am. I’m looking for a woman they brought in this morning. Car accident.”
“Heavens!” She smiled up at him, pressing her gnarled fingers to her chest. “Seeing a handsome man in his blues does my heart good. Real good. My husband was a Navy man too, God rest his soul. Now, what was the patient’s name?”
“Jill Connor.”
“Let’s see.” Squinting at the computer, she dragged her arthritic fingers slowly down the list of hospital patients. “Yes. Here she is. Oh.”  Her lower lip trembled. “Dear.”
A fist strangled his vocal cords. “She didn’t survive the accident?”
“Now, don’t think the worst. She’s had surgery, which means her visitors are restricted.” The woman rose and came around the desk. Taking his arm, she said quietly, “You might not be able to see her today unless you are an immediate family member. Are you family, Lieutenant Commander?”
Nick didn’t answer. He knew better than to lie to his elders.
“I thought not. But she is important to you?”
Jill Connor was a dying man’s last wish and a promise Nick shouldn't have made. “She’s the only thing important to me right now. I have to see her.”
Lucille nodded and gave his arm a gentle squeeze. “All right then.” She wrote on a visitor’s card and handed it to him. “Take this to the nurse at the station on the third floor. She’s a bit of a stickler about visitors, but this note should get you in. Good luck, Lieutenant Commander. I hope your lady friend gets better fast.”
Once inside the elevator, he glanced at the visitor’s card. Lucille had scrawled, “Brother of patient.”
Nick’s heart pounded. His hand shook. The ringing in his ears started up, and his vision began to tunnel. Shit, it was happening again. The card filled with blood and splattered the linoleum tiles beneath his feet. “Son of a bitch!”
He dropped the card and ground it under his heel. Blood soaked up his pant leg as if it were a thick straw. No matter how hard he stomped, he couldn't stop the flow. He was panting when the elevator opened on the third floor.
A man got on. “Good afternoon.”
Nick nodded, picked up the card, and smoothed out the wrinkles on his pants. No blood in sight. Visions attacked him when he least expected them, and there wasn't a damned thing he could do about them.
The nurse glanced at the “brother” card and buzzed him in without question. People saw what they wanted to see, and a decorated hero usually went where he wanted to go. Nick scrubbed his hands thoroughly at the washing station and was grateful that no blood circled the drain. He followed the nurse down a long corridor that reeked of cleaning supplies, and to him, death.
“This is her room,” the nurse said.
He hung back while the nurse messed around with the IVs going into tanned, muscular arms. A swimmer’s arms. How many times had he fantasized about them wrapped around his back?
Nick couldn’t take his eyes off the frail woman in the bed. Shadows pooled under her closed dark lashes. Brown freckles sprinkled across her nose stood out as a sharp contrast to her impossibly fair cheeks. She had random bruises too, most likely collateral damage from the airbag. The dark hair he’d only seen pulled up in a ponytail fanned out across the stark white pillow. Damn, she was beautiful, even now. But so small.
The picture he carried in his wallet had captured a stop-your-heart gorgeous athlete with tanned skin, a wicked glint in her green eyes, and a first place medal around her neck. The times they’d spoken by Skype, she’d seemed larger than life. This person in the bed clung to life.
“Your brother is here,” the nurse said softly. “Can you open your eyes?”
Jill stirred in her sleep.
The nurse turned to him. “She’s tired. If she does wake, don’t be surprised if she’s a bit fuzzy-headed. That’s normal. She’s been through a terrible trauma and might not know about the foot yet.”
Nick’s gaze swept across the off-white cotton blanket. Near the bottom of the bed, where the pillows had been piled up, he saw something he’d never wanted to see. Holy hell! Jill’s right foot was gone.
“Don’t stay long,” the nurse admonished on her way out. “If she’s thirsty, you can give her a few ice chips.”
Nick was alone with a woman he’d never met in person.
