{Paranormal Romance Novella Review} Hunger for You (Shadow Shifters; Damaged Hearts #3) by A.C. Arthur

Hunger for You
Shadow Shifters: Damaged Hearts—a deeply emotional, unforgettable New Adult paranormal romance series by A.C. Arthur about the men who are sworn to protect the females—human or otherwise—from the savage fury of his own nature…Taken in by a shifter family after his parents’ tragic deaths, Caleb Ramsey was thrust into a world of training and loyalty, when his half-breed status should have sentenced him to death. Desperate to escape a family that he can never truly belong to, Caleb leaves at nineteen to find his place outside the Shifter warrior world. The beautiful girl in the bar was not a part of his plan. Neither was finding out more about the boyfriend she claims to have. He should have walked away, should have continued on his own path. But when Caleb realizes the danger Zoe is in, all of his warrior urges come roaring to life…Zoe Fallon has always been a romantic idealist. Losing herself in romance novels as a way to escape an abusive past, she is now finally free to go out and find her own Prince Charming. So when a gorgeous man literally sweeps her off her feet, she wonders if she may have found the guy of her dreams. But things aren’t always what they seem. The brooding customer who seems to show up each time she’s in need is an enigma, and yet she’s drawn to him in a way she’s never experienced before. But he has his own secrets, and Zoe has to ask herself—if Caleb is truly her happily ever after, in Hunger for You by A.C. Arthur. (Blurb via Goodreads)

"I'd say she was like a breath of fresh air, but I don't talk like that." (page 1, line 1)
I've enjoyed the Shadow Shifters/Damaged Hearts series. With Hunger for You, book three in the series, I'm glad to see it come full circle, to see these guys I've come to love find love, acceptance of themselves and their natures. Hunger for You can be read as a standalone, each of the novellas can be read as a standalone, but I encourage you to read the entire series.

Caleb is fighting against his nature, avoiding the connections to his adopted family, avoiding connections to humans; he's just getting through life, and then he sees this girl and he goes all stalkerish, but it in a good-ish way. Zoe makes him want things. To watch over her, protect her, to get close to her. But he fights his attraction, fights caring for her at all, he doesn't want to care for anyone, but he can't escape his nature any more than he can escape his feelings for her.

Zoe has been through a lot, survived a lot. I didn't think she was as complicated of a character as Caleb, or nearly as interesting but I respected how strong she was. To have endured what she had and to keep going, to learn to love and trust someone again.

"He kissed me." (page 1, line 1)
I liked Lidia. She's smart and practical and stubborn. She's also complicated girl. She wants a normal life, she wants to be best friends with Brayden - not more:
"...I rolled my eyes and sighed inwardly because I knew I was being unreasonable. Being upset with Brayden because he'd been right all along was petty. Being upset with my DNA was even more pointless. But dammit, I wanted to be upset! I didn't want to have a mate and I especially didn't want that mate to be Brayden." (ebook, location 1321)
I understood Lidia's desire for a normal life - a horrific past, the way she was treated by others of her kind, I wouldn't be raising my hand volunteering to risk my life on their behalf either. And then there's her fear that she will hurt the people she loves.

Her reticence when it came to changing her relationship with Brayden was both understandable - all that baggage the girl has and she risks losing her best friend - and frustrating because Brayden is an amazing guy. He's a guy you can count on, will support you and defend you, and they have great chemistry. He knows what he wants and he's willing to do whatever it takes to get it.
"I wish I could have it all," she whispered.

I moved then, turning Lidia until she lay on her back and I could look down into her face. I cupped her chin so she couldn't look away. "I only wish I could have you." (ebook, location 1420)
Part of Me was exciting, fast paced, with loveable characters and a romance years in the making. I've enjoyed this series very much and can't wait to read the next book in the series, Hunger For You.

{Excerpt}

MINE TO CLAIM
By A.C. Arthur
© A.C. Arthur, 2014

I thought he was going to kiss me.
     Then I thought, no way!
     But yes and yes.
His lips touched mine in a quick heated moment, so fast I almost choked on the air that was trapped in my lungs. My hands went to his chest but not of their own free will. I felt captured and taken and I wasn’t doing anything to stop it.
The pressure of his mouth pressed against mine was intense, so much so that my eyes fluttered closed just as the butterflies that had been dancing around in my stomach since seeing him walk into that apartment, circled swiftly then plummeted completely. The anticipatory feeling rested in my center where it grew to a persistent throb just as his tongue swiped a warm path over my still closed lips.
Open your mouth. Kiss him back.
My body roared for my mind to hear and take note. It clearly wanted more.
My mind, on the other hand, was wondering what I was doing here—how did I get here and how did I end up in his arms? Wasn’t this wrong on some common sense level? Or was it just a natural attraction, one that I’d been waiting all my life to act on?
To hell with the Q&A, I opened my mouth and let him inside. It was sweet and intoxicating all at once, the touch of his tongue against mine in that first deep plunge. My head spun, my knees buckled, and I was thankful for his arms wrapped tightly around me. He tilted his head, I tilted mine in the opposite direction. He pulled his tongue out and I wanted to scream for more. My eyes opened and I was shocked to see him staring back at me. As if he heard that plea he plunged again and I drank it all in like the thirst I’d had for this type of physical connection had lasted a lifetime.
Suddenly my fingers were clenching his shirt, turning the material over and over, pulling on it as if I wanted the shirt off, out of the way. Then there would be skin, the skin of his muscled chest where I now felt the incessant beat of his heart. I pushed my body closer to his, thinking that maybe this heat he emanated would soothe the tingles rippling through me. It worked and then again it didn’t. I wanted more. I needed more, from him, from this guy named Aidan Sanchez who nobody on campus knew a damned thing about. Nobody, including me.
