{YA Review} Reboot by Amy Tintera

{YA Review} Reboot by Amy Tintera

Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders. (Blurb via Goodreads)

{Rating} 3/5 -- I liked it!

{Review}           Intriguing concept, imaginative storyline, lackluster delivery
"They always screamed." (page 1, line 1)
It's a harsh world Tintera envisions: disease, destruction, deprivation, death and zombies. I thought it was an interesting view of zombies - not brain hungry but not the same, they're reboots. Tintera makes being a zombie cool. You're super strong, virtually indestructible, more attractive and you don't want to eat brains.

And onto the characters. Wren. She's meant to be unemotional, wooden, and she felt wooden but that never really changed even as she was supposed to be developing as a character. I was intrigued by her though, her past, her kick-ass abilities.

Callum 22, the eager puppy dog. He's like the baby faced cop in action movies, the guy you know is going down - and soon. Although he got smacked around physically and emotionally he never really lost the sweet hopeful guy he was. I'm not sure how I felt about him as the guy for Wren, he did challenge her, and he helped her to make different choices, but I didn't really feel the emotional connection between them.

Although the story didn't knock my socks off I'm still interested in reading Reboot #2, which comes out in June 2014, I want to know where the story is heading, I want to know what the bigger picture is, what are HARC's plans, about the reservation, the hows and why of Wren's death.
