{Stars} 3/5, if I gave half points it would definitely be a 3.5/5

Kira is a girl you'd want to be friends with. She's smart, she's loyal and protective. She's a fighter, she's not going to sit back and let anyone walk over her. And it turns out she's pretty kick ass.
Jay is likable despite his many faults. He's immature and self-destructive but Kelly gets us to understand why and even sympathize with him. I tend to like the screwed up characters, they've got the most opportunity for growth. Throughout the book Kelly sets up the circumstances for that growth, where he's faced with a real challenge and we get to see who he really is.
While there was a romantic element most of the story was about Jay and Kira finding their way through difficult times, become friends and facing challenges to their relationship.
While I did like the alternating POVs, I had trouble at times with the story. I felt like explanations are missing, like I should have known something I didn't. I also found that there was more telling than showing and a big ole information dump when Jay introduces us to his friends. There were quite a few grammatical and punctuation issues, e.g. you/you're, misplaced or missing punctuation. I'm pretty tolerant but if it irritates you, beware.
I'm definitely keeping an eye out for book #2, Forming Darkness and book #3, Shaping Illumination. I'm excited to find out what happens next!
