{Romance Minute Review} Carved in Stone by Kate Douglas

Carved in Stone

Carved in Stone by

Archeologist and folklore expert Nate Murdock has discovered ancient stone carvings that will either revolutionize thinking in his field or get him laughed out of it entirely, and he’s hired world-renowned photographer Alex Martin to document his find and bolster his claim. When the alluring Alexandra Martin, not Alex, shows up for the job, Nate’s not sure whether to send her packing or take her into his arms.

Alexandra Martin, the daughter of the famed photographer and just as talented with a camera, is a dark-haired and dark-eyed beauty. Years ago her father built his reputation on photographs he’d stolen from her, and she’s out to prove once and for all that she’s the real deal. When the opportunity to work with the celebrated and ruggedly handsome Nate Murdock falls into her lap, she jumps at the chance—whether he likes it or not.

As tempers flare and accusations fly, the two dig in for a battle of wills and an uneasy truce at their remote mountainside camp. But when drug smugglers trap them in a cave and leave them to die, Nate and Alexandra realize they must trust each other—and the fiery passion growing between them—and surrender to a mysterious force as it guides them through a perilous escape and the acceptance of a powerful love as primal and compelling as the mountain itself.

"Full light was at least an hour away, but the pale glow in the eastern sky outlined the rocky monolith towering over Nate Murdock's campsite." (page 1, line 1)
A romantic suspense novel with a bit of a paranormal twist. The book moved quickly; right from the first funny and awkward meeting Alex and Nate are attracted to each other but things don't go well. Quick tempers and miscommunication complicate the situation but are soon resolved. Then the adventure starts.

I enjoyed their cave escapade. Kate Douglas did a good job of describing her vision of the cave, making me feel like I was right along there with them. I did get a little fed up with Alex, the whole 'all men are unreliable, untrustworthy', etc. Nate had proven himself over and over again. I also would have liked a bit more development, both in the characters individually and their relationship.

Losing the Ice, a novella length follow up to Crossing the Ice, picks up about eight months later, Courtney and Josh have been skating together and are about to compete in their first big competition. They're on the ice and then everything goes wrong.

Losing the Ice focuses on the aftermath of the incident - which I can't say more about because I don't want to spoil it. What happens tests them as partners, romantically and as skating partners. I enjoyed seeing Courtney and Josh together. Even when it's hard, even when everything is going wrong, you can feel that they love each other so much that they're going to find their way back to each other.

Josh's family also reappears. His parents are still the same, they're cold, dismissive, not supportive, still trying to push him back into the role they want him to have. It's terrible that they can't appreciate how amazing their son is. Courtney surprised me - in a good way. We get to see a side of her we didn't before, I might gasp actually start to like her.

And of course there is skating, good skating, not so good skating, and then, finally, the Pride & Prejudice inspired program. Losing the Ice left me wanting more, I am eagerly awaiting Ice #3, Taking the Ice.

And my favorite quotes from Losing the Ice?
"I loved my boyfriend.
I loved Josh's sweetness, his sensitivity, his passion, and his creativity. I loved how respectfully he treated me both as his girlfriend and his skating partner, and I loved how his clear blue eyes could melt me all over with just one look." (location 24)
And
"He smiled and wrapped one arm around me. "This day is my favorite everything." (location 1711)

Waiting on Wednesday (88) A School for Unusual Girls (Stranje House #1) by Kathleen Baldwin

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, created by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week I'm waiting on:

A School for Unusual Girls (Stranje House, #1)

A School for Unusual Girls (Stranje House #1) by

The launch of a captivating new YA series set in Regency England that #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot calls “completely original and totally engrossing.”

It’s 1814. Napoleon is exiled on Elba. Europe is in shambles. Britain is at war on four fronts. And Stranje House, a School for Unusual Girls, has become one of Regency England’s dark little secrets. The daughters of the beau monde who don't fit high society’s constrictive mold are banished to Stranje House to be reformed into marriageable young ladies. Or so their parents think. In truth, Headmistress Emma Stranje, the original unusual girl, has plans for the young ladies—plans that entangle the girls in the dangerous world of spies, diplomacy, and war.

After accidentally setting her father’s stables on fire while performing a scientific experiment, Miss Georgiana Fitzwilliam is sent to Stranje House. But Georgie has no intention of being turned into a simpering, pudding-headed, marriageable miss. She plans to escape as soon as possible—until she meets Lord Sebastian Wyatt. Thrust together in a desperate mission to invent a new invisible ink for the English war effort, Georgie and Sebastian must find a way to work together without losing their heads—or their hearts...

"There were two seasons in Chicago: winter and construction." (page 1, line 1)
Before I found the Chicagoland Vampire series I was tired of vampire books but Chloe Neill's series with a smart, bookish, clever girl turned vampire rekindled my love of the paranormal. Over the eleven books in the series - which I devoured - Merit has come into her own. She's the same sassy girl but as she faces new challenges, scary ones this time, she becomes more confident in her abilities.
In Dark Debt they face two foes, an unwelcome blast from Ethan's past and the mysterious foe that makes the team work hard to figure out how to save the day. All ends happily though, eventually, but there's excitement and action before we get there.
I love Ethan and Merit together, seeing the hard earned trust and commitment
All their challenges bring them closer instead of tearing them apart. There were some amusing moments too, Merit and Mallory's nickname accidentally comes out. Catcher and Mallory pop up too, I won't spoil it but they definitely bring the adorable.
If you haven't checked on the Chicagoland Vampire series go now and start reading, it has a smart, strong heroine, a well conceived world, interesting storylines, and memorable characters. I'm already eagerly awaiting the next installment.
