Waiting on Wednesday (121) Resist (Redzone #2) by Tracey Martin

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, created by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week I'm waiting on:

Truth is a powerful weapon…but explosives never hurt.

Sophia can run but she can’t hide. RedZone is on her tail and those of the six tech-augmented soldiers who escaped its clutches with her. If she could only focus on fighting her way to safety, she might live long enough to disappear. But it’s not just her own backside she needs to watch out for.

At her side is her boyfriend, Kyle. He’s the reason she found the courage to escape, and she’ll do anything to keep him and his secrets out of RedZone’s hands. Only problem is, since she was once sent to capture him, he has good reason not to trust her.

In fact, there’s not much trust to go around. RedZone keeps finding them, suggesting someone is a traitor. And if that’s not enough to recapture the group, the organization has a backup plan. One that will force Sophia and Kyle to choose between safety and risking everything one more time.

Warning: Contains killer robots, mutant college students, and dangerous super soldiers. And those are the good guys. It’s enough to make a rogue assassin wish she were taking her philosophy final instead.

{Excerpt}

Grant crossed his arms. “Really? Because I asked around too, and several of our lovely contestants said the ‘wardrobe malfunction’ was that she refused to put on any dress chosen for her. You realize why she wore a FSU shirt, don’t you, Richie. I hate that team. And as for ratings, I don’t give a rat’s—”
“Please, lower your voice. This isn’t as bad as it seems.”
“What did you say to her to make her stay? Don’t give me anymore BS about loopholes in contracts, either.”
Richie pressed his fingertips together thoughtfully. “You say this woman was the love of your life, yet you don’t even realize what she’s doing. I find that difficult to believe.”
“You said she was the love of my life. I told you to let her go.”
“Not going to happen, Grant. Besides, I thought you’d be happy about this turn of events. About what it means for you.”
Grant scowled. “Are you incapable of being direct?”
“Isn’t it obvious, Grant? She’s making what I would call a tremendous effort for you to vote her off. Which means she still has feelings for you.”
“You have a warped sense of reasoning.” She might have feelings for him, but they sure as hell weren’t romantic in any way. What, she was trying to woo him with a sweatshirt that smelled like hot dumpster trash? Richie was crazy.
“She can’t stand to be around you because of all the feelings your presence dredges up. Is that so hard to understand?”
Grant blinked. It actually wasn’t; he could relate. He wished he could turn off the memories her presence provoked in him. “You can’t let her run wild on the set, Richie. She’s making a joke out of your show. Don’t you care about that?”
Richie laughed. “She’s doing exactly what I’d hoped she’d do. The question is, are you going to let her beat you at this game?”
Grant took the seat behind him and leaned on Richie’s desk with his forearms. Of course, she was trying to get voted off the show. She hated his guts, and had an entire decade to let this medley of hatred and anger simmer. This was her loophole. Her way of getting out of the contract.  “You don’t know Chelle. She won’t give up. These tantrums will only get worse.”
“Look,” Richie said with a sympathetic sigh that barely hid his delight. “There’s a fine line between love and hate. Haven’t you ever heard that? She obviously has strong feelings toward you. It’s up to you to change the nature of those feelings.”
Grant wiped a hand down his face. Changing Rochelle’s mind about anything had always been a challenge. But changing her heart? Was that even possible?
“You handled yourself quite well last night,” Richie continued. “Very composed for the situation.”
“Am I just supposed to ignore her behavior? That’s not fair to the other women.”
Richie smirked. “Do you even remember the names of any of the other women?”
            Touché.

Kitties and kittens? How could I not want to read Rescued.

Rescued is a sweet, moving story. I liked the heroine, Tessa. She's both vulnerable and self-assured, open and insulated. She's like many other college students, struggling to find her place in the world. She has a huge heart, gives so much of herself, but that huge heart of hers keeps getting trampled on. When she meets Thomas she can't help but fall even as she waits for the inevitable end.

Thomas has baggage too, he had been betrayed by people he loved, leaving him to pack up and make a fresh start in Seattle but didn't expect that fresh start to include meeting someone like Tessa. He has a big personality, he's confident and engaging and enthusiastic. He has a big heart too, he's kind and generous, and, like Tessa, I was a gonner for him the moment he fell for Melon.

I enjoyed Tessa and Thomas' evolution over the course of Rescued. They both learn to be honest with themselves about what they thought they wanted and what they really want and find the courage to tell the people in their lives that truth. I also liked them together, how they push each other, learn from each other, give each other a home.

Rescued is the first book in the Alley Kitten series and I'm excited to see Norah's story in the next installment.

The Rise (Project Grey Stream Book 1) by

When the world feels like an illusion, how do you separate truth from the lies?
Amanda Jensen has been dragged across the country since she was eight years old by her paranoid, drug-addicted mother. Navigating a new school every few months isn't her biggest problem. Hiding her secret, the fact that she can see buildings breathe when she looks at them, is.
In Chicago her vagabond life comes to a crashing halt when she is drawn in by researchers still hunting for a breakthrough in remote viewing, a scientific study of psychic phenomenon pursued by the Army decades ago. She moves to the unique community of Weston where nothing is as it seems; especially not the peculiar boy across the street whose strict father has been training him for military service since he took his first step. Soon Amanda is questioning the motivations of the people she is just beginning to trust, those she is suspicious of, and questioning what it is to be human. (Blurb via Goodreads)

Amanda Jane Jensen is either crazy, haunted, or a demon.
Oh, and her name isn't really Amanda Jane Jensen.
In The Rise, she discovered she has a unique ability to see through other people's eyes. The only problem, she can't see what's going on in front of her own.

One of the most unique, intriguing premises, fast paced, full of mystery and drama. A strong, resilient heroine, a boy who cares for her and confuses her in turns and a whole lot of secrets.

Amanda is a survivor. A heroine that has endured a horrible childhood, she learned young not to count on anyone but herself. She's also learned to hide her unique abilities. She just didn't know how unique she was until she stumbles upon some researchers who know more about her than she does. I liked Amanda from the start, her outlook on life, the way she just keeps going, and over the course of the novel, only liked her more.

I devoured The Rise and quickly moved on to The Surge. As fast paced and exciting as the first novel big things happen in The Surge. There are big changes, big moves forward, a few answers but there is still a lot more left undiscovered, leaving me eager for book three. It's official, I am hooked on this series.
