It happens whenever wolf shifter Roni Axton is near Marcus Fuller: a crackle of sexual awareness that’s intoxicating…and deeply annoying. Marcus is a pack enforcer who oozes power, but Roni is lethal in her own right—nothing like the flirty females who flock around him. Even still, his possessive gaze makes one thing clear. Marcus has singled her out for seduction, and he wants to make her sit up and beg.
No matter how aloof and unfazed Roni acts, Marcus can tell she wants him. When a brutal attack by a jackal pack forces them to work together, it’s the perfect opportunity for Marcus to chip away at her defenses—until he falls into his own trap, completely unprepared for the intensity of their connection. Roni is the only one who’s ever seen past his shifter charm and discovered the man hiding beneath it. And for Marcus, claiming Roni once will mean needing her forever. (Blurb via Goodreads)

Roni is strong, vicious, independent, socially awkward, absolutely devoted to those she loves and determined to avoid Marcus's attempt at seduction. Marcus wants Roni. Desperately. He is a match for Roni in every way, just as strong, vicious, and protective, but he's outgoing and charming where she's awkward and reserved with affection."Opening your eyes to find that you're upside down can't be good, can it?" (page 1, line 1)
While I wasn't a fan of the jackal storyline, I just didn't find it all that interesting, I did like the development of the relationship between Roni and Marcus. I liked how they respected each other's strengths. How they saw past the surface, understood each other and love each other. I adored Marcus for not letting Roni hide, to run away, to accept less than she deserves. Roni is not at all touchy feely, she's beyond independent but that's what he needs. After a screwed up childhood he needs someone strong enough to stand on her own but able to still love him.
Dark Instincts is book four in the Phoenix Pack series and can be read without reading the previous installments as I did but there is so much history and so many relationships that I felt like I would have gotten more out of the book if I'd read the other books first.
