Solving for Ex
300 pages
Release Date: February 11th 2014
1 crush on your best friend +
1 gorgeous, scheming new girl +
1 Mathletics competition =
1 big mess
SIMPLIFY.
Ashley Price doesn’t have much in life after being bullied so hard she had to leave her old school to live with her aunt and uncle in Pittsburgh. But the camera she borrowed from her best friend and secret crush Brendan, and her off the charts math abilities, make things a lot more bearable. Plus, since Brendan is the captain, making the school Mathletes team should be easy.
But when gorgeous new girl Sofia rolls in and steals Brendan, Ashley's place on the team, and her fragile foothold on the Mansfield Park Prep social totem pole, it’s on. Sofia is everything Ashley left her old school to escape. The only thing Ashley didn’t count on is Sofia’s sexy twin brother Vincent.
Vincent is not only the hottest boy in school, he’s charming, sweet, and he’s got his eye on Ashley. He’s also not taking no for an answer. There's no real reason Ashley shouldn't like Vincent, but with the battle lines being drawn between her and Sofia, Ashley’s not sure which side he’s on. Or which side she wants him to be on.
She does know Sofia is trouble with a capital T, and she’s determined to make Brendan see it.
SOLVING FOR EX is a YA contemporary romance that remixes Mansfield Park as Clueless meets Mean Girls in a crazy mix of high school society, mathletic competition, and teenage romance.

Praise for SOLVING FOR EX by LeighAnn Kopans

“Amazing! If you like Sarah Dessen you will LOVE this.”
-          Emma Pass, author of Acid and The Fearless (Random House)

"Putting a modern spin on a Jane Austen classic, Solving for Ex proves that brains can be sexier than brawn. In this complicated equation of high school drama, mean girls, mathletics, and romance, LeighAnn delivers yet another beautifully written young adult novel that authentically captures teenage emotions while also capturing the reader's heart."
-          Nikki Godwin, author of Chasing Forever Down, American Girl on Saturn, and the upcoming Falling from the Sky

“Ashley is the kind of girl you want to root for, smart and capable and self-assured, despite of, or maybe because of, her vulnerabilities. And in Brenden, LeighAnn has crafted a boy worth of such a girl. Through all the heartbreak and angst of high school, their connection is undeniable and pressing. It's elementary, dear readers - Solving for Ex is one must-read romance.”
-          Jenny Kaczorowski, author of The Art of Falling (Bloomsbury 2013)

“If you only read one book in 2014, make sure it's Solving For Ex! I sincerely doubt that you'd regret reading it; it's intelligent, hilarious, intense and touching…Honestly one of the most amazing books I have ever read.”
Luciana Scath, blogger at Figments of our Imagination

{Review}
"If every problem had as clear and quick an answer as those on the Mathletes exam, I would have been winning at life." (page 1, line 1)
The concept is fabulous - and adorable - Mansfield Park + Mathletes. It's a brilliant idea and who doesn't love a good Jane Austen retelling? And the math cuteness at the end of the chapters? So clever!

I loved Kopans' writing style, how she painted the picture and drew me into the story. And the emotion of the story... I positively ached for Ashley. I felt her confusion and struggles as she dealt with bulling, mental illness, moving and all the changes the twins bring to her life. I liked Ashely, I thought she was an authentic, sweet girl who has been through a lot and she's just doing her best to fit in, to survive.

And the twins... Sofia. Kopans made Sofia the perfect mean girl. And Vincent... I know that Vincent is supposed to be the bad guy but I really liked him, he's so swoon-worthy. I really wanted him to be as perfect as he seemed.

I never could bring myself to like Brendan. Ashley tells us how awesome he has been to her but his actions now show something different. And not just romantically, he's supposed to be her best friend - her only friend - but he's oblivious to her feelings.

Overall I enjoyed the story and I'll definitely be reading more by LeighAnn Kopans.

Raised on comic books and classic novels, Leigh Ann developed an early love of science fiction and literature.  As an adult, she rediscovered her love for not only reading, but also writing the types of fiction that enchanted her as a teen.  Solving for Ex was born of her love for Jane Austen’s classics, and how they taught her that love stories could be funny and wickedly smart.
Leigh Ann, her husband, and four children live in Columbus, Ohio. When she’s not immersed in the world of fiction, you can find her obsessing over the latest superhero movie or using her kids as an excuse to go out for ice cream (again.)

Perfectly Messy
Release Date: May 2014
Popularity isn't everything it's cracked up to be. Justin Marshall knows this better than most. For the captain of the basketball team, small business owner, and son of Minnesota's next governor, life can get pretty overwhelming. But Justin can handle anything as long as he has Lucy, the girl who fell for the man he’s trying to be.

But for Justin and Lucy, finding time together proves challenging. Stolen kisses and whispered promises just aren't enough. That is, until scandalous photos of the couple are leaked to a press intent on creating a juicy scandal during Justin's dad's gubernatorial campaign. And when Lucy becomes fair play for the tabloids and gossip pages, Justin does the only thing he can to protect her: he breaks her heart.

For Lucy, junior year is everything she hoped it would be: new friends, second chances, and a boyfriend she can’t stop kissing. That is, until the boy she’s pretty sure she loves chooses the life his family wants for him, over her.

Now it’s up to Lucy to teach him what it really means to have everything. Because for Justin, being who everyone needs him to be just might cost him the one person he can’t live without.

{Adult Romance Review} Breakaway by Catherine Gayle

Breakaway
She’s reaching for a breakaway pass.
Dana Campbell has spent the past seven years in self-imposed isolation for a crime she didn’t commit. The danger is well in the past, but her panic attacks make it impossible to have a normal, healthy relationship with a man. Even her counselor has given up on her. She has to find someone she trusts to help her fight through the panic, or her seven-year ordeal will become a lifetime sentence. There’s only one man she feels safe enough to ask.

He got caught with his head down.

As the captain of the NHL’s once elite but now fading Portland Storm, Eric Zellinger knows a thing or two about keeping his focus on the job. Questions are flying about his ability to lead the team back to the playoffs. If they don’t make it, he might be shipped out of town. It’s the worst time possible for his best friend’s kid sister to divide his focus. How can he give her what she needs without jeopardizing both the Storm’s playoff hopes and his future with the team?

It’s her only chance, but it’s his last shot. (Blurb via Goodreads)

{Review}
"Amani's Family-Style Italian Restaurant was nearly empty." (page 1, line 1)
The storyline was engaging - I couldn't put it down - but it was also heartbreaking. What happened to Dana... Dana made me cry.  To see the person she was before, to see who she is now, the daily struggles she faces, how far she has to go to live a 'normal' life. As difficult as it was to watch Dana's journey, I really enjoyed the story.

Eric. Love him. He's the perfect mix of tender and fierce, of protective alpha male, of hot and sweet. I liked the hockey element, that while Eric's trying to help Dana and all the emotional repercussions of that he's also facing tremendous professional pressure; I really felt for his struggles.

I loved the dual POVs, the writing, the pacing, the love story, and the only problem I had was that I didn't buy Dana's obtuseness. I couldn't believe that she didn't see how much Eric loved her after what he did for her, what he was willing to go through for her. You don't do what Eric did unless you deeply, truly love someone.

I'm definitely going to be on the look out for more stories by Catherine Gayle and the next book in the Portland Storm series.
