Bound Together wraps up the Sisters of the Heart series as well as tying up some loose ends from the Sea Haven series. I'm sad to leave these series behind but also excited to be introduced to the new series, Torpedo Ink, and the characters populating that world.

I've read this book twice now but I'm still struggling to write a review and I'm not sure why. I'm a huge Christine Feehan fan. Over the last two or so years I've read/listened to almost every Christine Feehan book I could get my hands on. I've really enjoyed the Sisters of the Heart series, I'm currently re-listening to Earth Bound, to show how much I love it.

While all the Sisters of the Heart series have their dark moments - a lot of bad things have happened to both the heroes and the heroines - Bound Together is definitely the darkest. Blythe has been the 'mother' of the Sisters, the caretaker and level headed one, and finally we get to see the past that made her into the woman she is. I liked Blythe even more after learning of her past, the heartache and heartbreak, her huge heart, her capacity to forgive. Viktor was hard to like but easy to understand once you see everything he's endured. He sacrificed so much to protect both the family he was born into and the family he created.

I was engaged in the story from the beginning, cried along with the characters, celebrated with them, shook my head when Viktor did something stupid (he's a serious alpha male who is not used to being questioned or challenged and Blythe is no pushover), and smiled when they finally got their happily ever after. There's lots of action and drama, we get to see all the sisters and all the brothers together and using their various gifts to battle their enemy.

{eARC Minute Review} Wolf Hunger (SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team #7) by Paige Tyler

Wolf Hunger (SWAT, #7)

Wolf Hunger (SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team #7) by Paige Tyler

She’s all the wolf he’ll ever need

When SWAT Officer Max Lowry meets Lana Mason, he falls fast and hard. He’s positive she’s The One. And Max’s favorite part? Lana’s a wolf shifter too, so they can skip the awkward reveal and head straight to the happily ever after. There’s just one problem: Lana doesn’t know that she’s a werewolf.

To make matters worse, hunters with intent to kill have tracked Lana to Dallas. Max has to figure out how to keep Lana safe, show her who and what she really is—and just how much she means to him.

There's a lot going on this Wolf Hunger. A family in distress that brings up Max's painful history, a secret legacy, hunters moving ever closer, injury, loss, and of course the romance. The beginning of Max's story is hard as we learn about the tragic circumstances that led to Max's change but I held on because Max deserved a happy ending and I wanted to see it.
I enjoyed Max and Lana's love story from the first meeting, through interfering parents, loss and the revelation of secrets. It did feel like the love story was a bit overshadowed by the huge things that happened but it was satisfying none the less.

Wolf Hunger moved us one step closer to the showdown between the werewolves and the hunters and keeps me interested in finding out what happens next.

Six books into Paige Tyler's SWAT series and I'm still addicted. In Wolf Hunt we travel with a few of the SWAT wolf to New Orleans where Remy reunites with a woman from his past.

I enjoyed the action/drama of Remy's New Orleans mission as well as the romantic drama with Triana and Remy. Things happen fast, Remy is caught by Triana's scent and Triana finds herself charmed but their past together makes it not seem quite so abrupt. Neither are a geographically desirable partner but their connection is so strong that you know these two will find a way.

Triana's mother was a fun character. She was really interesting and has her own connection to the werewolf community that helps Triana find her way. I loved the background of New Orleans, especially when all the drama of the pendant and romance comes to a head during the middle of a storm.

He’s Paxton Wilder.

The world is his playground—especially this year—and for the next nine months I’m stuck as his tutor on the Study at Sea program.

He’s too busy staging worldwide stunts for his documentary to get to class.

But if I can’t get him to take academics seriously, I’ll lose my scholarship…if I don’t lose my heart first.

Six unlikely friends on a nine-month cruise with the Study at Sea program will learn that chemistry is more than a subject and the best lessons aren’t taught in the classroom…but in the heart.

Rebecca Yarros is one of the very few authors I have on my "buy everything they write" list. Her books have fabulous characters, heart wrenching storylines, and some of the best love stories I've read.

Wilder, the first book in The Renegades series, is an awesome book. I loved it from start to finish! There is so much to love, the setting (I would have been first to sign up for the Study at Sea program), the romance that is both sweet and hot with the forbidden love aspect, a storyline that has bit of mystery, a twist I didn't see coming and a happy ending.

It's hard to say much about the plot, the book blurb is really mysterious - it doesn't even say the heroine's name - but I'll do what I can to show how I enjoyed the book without giving too much away.

I really enjoyed Shadow Reaper, I loved seeing more of the Ferraro family, I liked Ricco even more after learning about his past, I thought the heroine was a strong character, damaged but kind, compassionate, and courageous, and there was quite a bit of action and excitement.

The relationship between the heroine and Ricco was my favorite part of the story. They have both endured terrible trials in their past, have been scarred by what they've survived and those scars still influence who they are today. I enjoyed how Christine Feehan used Shibari to develop their relationship; it was about sex but more than that it was about trust.

This is the second installment in the Shadow series and I do think you would enjoy it better if you read book one first to understand the world of shadow riders and get to meet the characters but it isn't strictly necessary. Shadow Reaper has confirmed that I'm a definite fan of this series and can't wait to learn whose story comes next.

{eARC Review} Call to Honor (Team Poseidon #1) by Tawny Weber

I loved this one. I was drawn in from the first page. Tawny Weber does a great job of introducing her characters. You get to see who they are, their personalities, motivations, and more, quickly, but organically.
Diego is a great hero. He's all about honor. About doing the right thing. He struggles with the concept that one of the 'brothers' in his SEAL team is a traitor, he just can't believe any of them aren't as honorable as he is. He also isn't sure what to do about Harper and Nathan. Diego hates the idea of lying to Harper, of grilling her and her son for information, but he's a guy who gets the job done even if it's hard.
Harper is a strong, devoted heroine. She's pulled herself out of challenging circumstances and built a stable, happy life for her and her son. Nathan was an adorable kid. He lets us see the softer side of Diego, the warm, protective Harper but also their fiercer sides.
The story flows well, slowly unfolding the mystery of the traitor (even if it's not a big mystery), but still leaving me interested in how things will turn out.
By the end of Call to Honor Tawny Weber has shown me enough about Team Poseidon that I'm eager to see what's going to happen next. This may be my first Tawny Weber novel but it definitely won't be the last.

[eARC Review} On the Market (The Ballard Brothers of Darling Bay Book 1) by Rachael Herron

On the Market (The Ballard Brothers of Darling Bay Book 1)

On the Market (The Ballard Brothers of Darling Bay Book 1) by

The Bachelor meets The Property Brothers:
Love, property, and construction. What could possibly go wrong?

From international bestseller Rachael Herron, comes another book too delightful to put down:

Liam Ballard is good at buying houses, fixing them up with his brothers, and flipping them for a profit. When Felicia from the network shows up to offer them a reality show (the brothers renovate a house while one of them dates the buyer), the pay is too good to turn down. With it, they'll finally be able to open the after-school program for at-risk youth to honor the man who raised them. But when the very LA-like Felicia decides she'll be the buyer of the property (and his date), Liam wonders for the first time what set of keys he'll want to pass over to her, and will one of them unlock his heart?

A heart-warming, laugh-out-loud installment in the small town you love to visit.

{Review}

Think The Property Brothers if one of the guys was supposed to fall for the homeowner during the purchase and renovation. I have no idea why I waited so long to pick up this book! I adored it. The characters, the setting - the house! - there was so much to love.

The characters are all endearing and wonderfully flawed. There aren't any perfect characters to be found here and the author isn't afraid to show their mistakes. It was hard to get in Felicia's head. I liked her but I couldn't understand her and the decisions she made. The author did a good job of trying to show her thought processes and how her upbringing would have guided her to those decisions but I still wanted to shake her. Liam has an enormous heart. He's uber-protective of those he loves, he's got issues - major childhood pain - but he has an amazing capacity for love. Of all the characters my favorite, hands-down, was the house. It was definitely the star of the book.

I did feel like the book was rushed near the end and I didn't feel like I saw enough of the other Ballard Brothers who are supposed to be the leading men in the next books but if you're looking for a quick, sweet and steamy romance novel set in a fabulous location check out On the Market.

{eARC Review} Leopard's Fury (Leopard People #9) by Christine Feehan

Leopard's Fury (Leopard People, #9)
With her own bakery in San Antonio, Evangeline Tregre made a new life far from the brutal lair of shifters she was born into. Though she is all too aware of her leopard-shifter blood, she never felt the sensation of a wild animal stirring inside her. Not until Alonzo Massi walked into her bakery. The powerful shifter is as irresistible as he is terrifying, but his icy demeanor tells her to keep her distance.

Alonzo knows better than to let himself get involved with someone like Evangeline. She doesn’t deserve the type of danger that follows him, or the threat of his Amur leopard. But even with his lean muscle and iron will, Alonzo isn’t strong enough to stay away from the one woman who can make him feel at peace. And when their secret lives draw a mortal threat, Alonzo unleashes the feral passion he keeps pent up inside himself. (Blurb via Goodreads)

{Review}
The latest addition to the Leopard People series is classic Christine Feehan: alpha males, strong women, violence, passion, family, drama and a happily ever after.
Evangeline's childhood was terrible. She was neglected, tortured, terrified, but she survived. She's put herself back together, she's created a life she loves, doing something she loves. And then a man walks through her door and turns her life upside down. She's may be young and innocent but she's also fierce, determined, and protective.

Alonzo can't stay away from Evangeline. His leopard is difficult - scary difficult - but around sweet, innocent Evangeline he calms. I felt for Alonzo. His childhood was horrific, he's seen and done things that would break the strongest of people, but he survived. He's still got his demons, lives a dangerous life, and doesn't think he deserves a woman much less one like Evangeline and it's a battle to get him to give in.

I liked Alonzo and Evangeline. He goes all alpha male but she's not afraid to stand up to him, he cares and protects her like no one in her life ever had before. I also liked that Evangeline has always known about her leopard, that it was been her companion, her protector, even if they haven't always been in agreement. I loved Alonzo's relationship with his brother and cousins and how they brought Evangeline into the fold, teasing and bantering with her.

As always, when I reach the end of one of Christine Feehan's novels I'm eager for another.

{eARC Review} The Darkest Link (Second Circle Tattoos #4) by Scarlett Cole

The Darkest Link (Second Circle Tattoos, #4)
When her car breaks down off the side of a lonely highway far from her sunny Miami home, tattoo artist Lia never expected her very own white knight to ride up on the back of a barely street-legal motorcycle...and she never expected to fall for her dark savior. After a string of failed relationships and a bruised heart, Lia is not looking for forever, and the hot mechanic, with his sexy scruff and shaggy hair, is simply impossible to resist and the perfect candidate for mind-blowingly-perfect, no-strings-attached one night stand.

Reid left his life in Chicago far behind him and hasn't been back, but he's never been able to escape the guilt he feels about his own painful role in inviting a monster into his baby sister's life. A monster who almost destroyed her. Being with Lia is an unexpected gift, one he doesn't feel he deserves, and their one night together has him wanting more than he should. Especially since she doesn't know the truth about his past. However, when he finds Lia’s bracelet in his bed, he has the perfect excuse to drive down and surprise her at her tattoo studio, Second Circle Tattoos, in Miami. He's in for an even bigger shock - and a fist to the face - when his past and present collide in the humid Miami weather when he runs into the last person he’d ever expect to see in a tattoo studio: Harper, the sister he betrayed, and the last link to his former life.

I loved Harper from the first book in the Second Circle Tattoos novels. When learning about what she survived and the role her brother, Reid, played in the ordeal I saw him as a villain. When I read the description for The Darkest Link I thought 'how in the world am I going to see this guy as a hero much less like him".

I was pleasantly surprised. Reid isn't perfect but he's also not a monster. There are a lot of things that he hid from Harper and a lot of guilt he's been lugging around after him. It's an emotional ride as Reid reunites with Harper and faces his own demons but ultimately satisfying.

In comparison to Reid's rather tortured existence Lia seems a little boring though she's got her own family issues. I felt for her as she tried to manage a rocky relationship with her family while being true to herself and the life she wants to lead.

A spicy romance, family drama and a dash of danger, it's Second Circle Tattoos.

Grisham and Greta have a history but when they meet again when Grisham comes to Greta's rescue it's an opportunity for a new beginning. I enjoyed the romance, Greta is great for Grisham, as well as the elements of suspense in the storyline.

I enjoyed Diana Gardin's writing, the pacing was great, the characters perfectly imperfectly and told from dual POVs we get to see in both Grisham and Greta's heads. Although this is book two in the series Battle Scars it can be read as a standalone, I did, but it did make me want to read book one, Last True Hero.

Sweet, cute story. I liked Valentina and Giovanni, they're both trying to do the very best for their kids while working through their own issues, and pasts, his failed marriage and life/work balance and her career issues and affair she regrets. The boys really stole the show, they're cute and loving and charming. Valentina and Giovanni were both more forgiving than I would have been but they're right, when your heart is full of love there isn't room for anything else. If you're looking for a sweet, heartwarming story, give The Billionaire's Baby Swap a try.

"An awesomely fun, modern day fairy tale!" - Lori Foster, NYT bestselling author

Aspiring concert violist Emmaline Aurora Grace Andrews is torn between her love of family and her love of music. Prince Kristos Andris was a respected captain in his nation's military... Was. But now he must accept his responsibilities and leave his troops behind. Outraged at the restrictions of his new royal position, he'll do anything for one last adventure. So when opportunity suddenly lands in his arms in the form of a dreamy-eyed American girl, he embraces it (and her) for all he's worth. What's the harm in a quick fling, after all? Kristos a soldier. He had a life, a plan, he never wanted to be king, and he's struggling with a new path, with grief and changed expectations and responsibilities. Just when he finally has to face up to those responsibilities he meets a girl. Emmaline can understand Kristos in a way few others can. She had a plan, a dream that has also been derailed by her parent's accident.

Things happen quickly, their attraction is immediate and irresistible and things get sexy so this is definitely a story for mature readers. I love how they make each other feel, like they can handle the twists and turns of life. They're like magnets, they can't stay away from each other. When they're near they can't help but touch, kiss, be close in every way they can.

I liked the friendship between the girls, they've got each other's backs. They're supportive but they also have fun.

And what's a royal story without Cinderella moments?

{Excerpt}

Buildings crumbled like they always had in the rough area of L.A., and shadows lingered, like before, waiting to harm. But these were different. Jax wandered down the street, looking for survivors, when the patter of gunfire stopped him cold.
            The small distribution center. Shit.
Dodging into a run, he hurried around rusting cars to the warehouse, finding a group of Twenty gang members firing on a huge black guy wearing a bloody football jersey. The man looked familiar and seemed to be protecting the warehouse.
Keeping out of sight, Jax had angled around to the back, only to find a bunch of elderly people and kids hiding in the warehouse near a barrel of what looked like toasted oats.
The gang would kill them without a thought.
Jax hustled by them, gun out, and inched up behind the football player’s side. “I’m with you.”
The guy half turned, a wild glint in his dark eyes. “You sure?”
“Yep. Jax Mercury.” He angled farther and fired, clipping a Twenty member in the side, having given up his allegiance the second he’d taken his oath in the military. “You have any combat experience?”
            “Wyatt Quaid. No.”
“From the Niners?” Jax took aim and fired again. A yelp of pain filled the afternoon.
Wyatt fired and hit the dirt. “I used to be.”
“Go left, and I’ll go right,” Jax said, shifting into command mode. For now, he had a mission, and he’d win it.

“Jax?” Wyatt asked, yanking him back into the present.
            “Is your stomach okay?”
            “No.” Wyatt grimaced. “You ready?”
            “Yep.”
The back door to the cavernous space opened, and a group of twenty people filed in. They wore torn clothing but had jackets and hand-stitched patches on their arms showing they’d completed the training for scavenging. Jax breathed out. “Fuck, they’re young.”
            Wyatt winced. “No shit.”
“They’re supposed to at least be sixteen years old,” Jax muttered.
“They are.” Wyatt stood. “Line up.”
The kids, and there was no doubt they were kids, formed two lines of ten. Jax shoved to his feet, eyeing them. A couple kept his gaze, while several more dropped theirs to the floor. “How many sections are there inside our grid?” he asked.
“Seventeen,” a blond girl in the back said.
The girl should’ve been planning for college and going to dances, not memorizing the layout of their territory. “Good. How many sections outside to the west?”
“Fifty sections straight west,” a kid barely sporting a goatee said from the left.
“Good.” Jax walked back and forth in front of the line. The kids were smart so far. “Do you ever go out of your ordered area?” he asked.
“Only in extreme situations to avoid Rippers.” The blonde spoke up again.
            “What’s a Ripper?” Jax asked.
A couple of the kids chuckled. “Zombies,” one muttered.
Jax cut a hard look at Wyatt.
Wyatt shook his head. “Zombies don’t exist, dumbass.”
The kid with the goatee shot an elbow into his buddy’s gut. “We know that. First of all, zombies aren’t real.” He stood at attention. “Second of all, if zombies did exist, then they’d be what was left over after a human died. The person dies, and then the zombie bug takes over. Everyone who ever watched The Walking Dead knows that.” He sighed and looked down at his feet. “And third, zombies don’t exist in real life.”
“That was number one,” his buddy drawled.
“No shit.” The kid rubbed his eyes. “But if they’re still human, it seems like we could reason with them.”
Jax rolled a shoulder. So long as the kids knew how to scavenge and how to defend themselves, he had to send them out. “You have to understand that the bacteria does not always kill human beings; sometimes the patient survives, but the Scorpius bacteria still remains within the body, stripping a small part of the brain. The contagion alters brain activity in everybody who is infected, but only turns half of the folks into killers. We don’t know why. It might have something to do with oxytocin, which is a chemical we think relates to empathy. Some folks lose it all, and some only part or none.”
The kid nodded. “So there’s no hope for Rippers.”
“No.” Jax kept the kid’s gaze. “Don’t try to reason with them. There are two main types of Rippers. The first is organized and intelligent like a serial killer. If one of these attacks you, it’s planned, and they have bad things in mind for you. The second is disorganized and just plain crazy, and they’re more likely to rip you apart like an animal. Run from either.”
The kids started to shuffle their feet. Jax put bite into his voice. “When you’re out on mission, your goal is to be as quiet as possible. Don’t be seen, and definitely don’t be heard. What’s your motto?”
“Shoot first, question later,” the kids said in unison.
“Good.” Jax clasped his hands at his back and walked toward a small girl, another blonde, this one with bright blue eyes. What was her name? Haylee. Yeah, that was it. Her mother, April, worked as a cook at the soldier headquarters. “Who’s the enemy?” he asked softly.
Haylee kept his gaze. “Everybody not in Vanguard.” Sadness and determination lifted her chin.
“Yes. Out there you’ll find Rippers, rival gangs, and just ordinary people willing to kill you over a bottle of water. You wouldn’t be wearing that patch if you weren’t fit and prepared to fight.” He’d set the training requirements himself, and they included learning how to fight hand-to-hand, with a knife, and with guns. The kids were as much soldiers as scavengers, but he needed supplies more than protection right now. “We require medical supplies, food, water, and gas. Go out and find some.”
Haylee drew in air. Her eyes held both an old wisdom and a desolate acceptance. “To what end?”
Jax paused. “That’s a good question. Right now, it’s to survive. The bacteria is still running its course, Rippers are either getting reckless or planning big, and rival gangs want our supplies. For now, we fight.”
            She swallowed. “For now.”
Smart kid. “Then hopefully we find a cure or at least a way to live with the infection, and we build anew.” Including some sort of civilization.
“But now we fight,” she whispered, her face too pale.
He tried to infuse confidence and arrogance into his voice. “And we win.”
The kids stood at attention and then slowly filed out.
            Jax eyed Wyatt.
“I know. They’re young and have no clue what a Ripper will do.”
Yeah, but who did? Jax loped toward papers taped to the west wall where the entire seven square blocks of his territory had been painstakingly drawn. The outside buildings had all been fortified with turned-over trucks, vans, and other vehicles. Kids and the elderly were in the dead center near the hospital, which used to be an elementary school, and the current food depot, which had once been a small grocery store.
He’d planned every single inch of Vanguard territory with protection and survival in mind for his force of five hundred people, but it was getting more difficult to keep the enemy outside. “We need to shore up the eastern edge,” he said, pointing to a series of old apartment buildings.
Wyatt nodded. “We have a new force of soldiers ready to defend, but none have seen combat.”
“They will soon enough.” Jax rubbed his left eye to get rid of the pain behind it.
“When’s the last time you slept?” Wyatt asked.
Jax shrugged. “Day before yesterday? Maybe?”
Wyatt shook his head. “How do you do that?”
“Military training.” Jax turned to recheck the security for headquarters. Training wasn’t all, though, was it? He swallowed and kept going, not looking back. Now wasn’t the time to share his secrets, not even with Wyatt.

Another winner from Rebecca Zanetti; I couldn't put it down.

Zanetti paints a bleak picture of the future - a deadly bacteria that kills you or, if you survive, changes you into a new person, but more likely turning you into something like a zombie or a high functioning murdering sociopath. Resources are scarce, people are afraid and desperate and fighting with all they have to survive for just another day.

Jax is a gangbanger turned soldier turned leader of a small band of survivors. He doesn't want to be a leader and struggles with what that means is a big part of his journey throughout the book. Jax is all alpha male; he's loyal, honorable, determined, he'd walk through gunfire, bombs, for someone he cared for or considered his responsibility. If I was living in a world where the Scorpius bacteria reigned there's no one I'd rather follow than Jax.

Lynn is an anomaly. She's the girl with a blue heart. A girl everyone is looking for. I admired her strength, terrible things have happened to her but she never gives up. Her notoriety and blue heart make her an outsider and target of distrust leaving her feeling alone but she takes it and keeps going. Jax and Lynn are such a great match, complimenting each other, strong where the other is weak and they're both so protective.

Mercury Striking is the first book in the Scorpius Syndrome series and I can't wait to see what happens next.
