Bridges Burned (Going Down in Flames #2)
Release Date: 01/19/15
Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:

Don't just fight the system…burn it.

Since discovering she is a shape-shifting, fire-breathing dragon on her sixteenth birthday (surprise!), Bryn McKenna’s world has been thrown into chaos. Being a “crossbreed”—part Red dragon and part Blue—means Bryn will never fit in. Not with dragon society. Not with the archaic and controlling Directorate. And definitely not when she has striped hair and a not-so-popular affection for rule-breaking…

But sneaking around with her secret boyfriend, Zavien, gets a whole lot harder when he’s betrothed to someone else. Someone who isn't a mixed breed and totally forbidden. And for an added complication, it turns out Bryn’s former archnemesis Jaxon Westgate isn’t quite the evil asshat she thought. Now she’s caught between her desire to fit in and a need to set things on fire. Literally.

Because if Bryn can’t adapt to the status quo…well, then maybe it’s time for her to change it.

{Review}
"On the drive back to school, Bryn reflected on how her life had recently gone to hell." (page 1, line 1)
Bridges Burned picks up right after the first book, Going Down in Flames, ended - if you haven't read it go do it now, it's awesome. Bryn is still fabulously sassy, mouthy, independent, with a huge appetite. Bryn really grows up in this book as her life changes again and again and endures heartbreak, betrayal, and threats all around her.

As to the other characters: I wasn't a fan of the turn in the Zavien storyline. Without spoiling things I was confused about what happened, it's like he had a personality transplant between book one and two. I loved Clint and Ivy, the best friends a girl could ask for, and their comments about killing Zavien were laugh out loud. Surprisingly Jaxon is growing on me. He's still snooty and bossy and strikes sparks off of Bryn because in so many ways they're very alike but he's actually a decent guy deep down. And Valmont, Bryn's knight? He didn't really stand out for me in book one but I came to adore him, he's kind and charming and the shoulder Bryn needs to lean on. I'm interested in find out what's going to happen there. Is there more to the dragon/knight connection? Is a romance in their future?

There's quite a bit of action, excitement and mysteries. Bridges Burned focuses less on romance - there's romantic drama for sure - but there is more about the drama of being a dragon, of wrestling with the constrictions of the Directorate, of growing up and all the hurts involved.

The ending came too soon, there was too much still up in the air, but it did leave me eager for the next book in the Going Down in Flames series.

Going Down in Flames

Going Down in Flames
Release Date: 06/30/14
Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:
If her love life is going down in flames, she might as well spark a revolution.

Finding out on your sixteenth birthday you’re a shape-shifting dragon is tough to swallow. Being hauled off to an elite boarding school is enough to choke on.

Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention.

Zavien is tired of the Council’s rules. Segregated clans, being told who to love, and close-minded leaders make freedom of choice almost impossible. The new girl with the striped hair is a breath of fresh air, and with Bryn’s help, they may be able to change the rules.

At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. She’ll need to learn to control her dragon powers if she wants to make it through her first year at school. But even focusing on staying alive is difficult when you’re falling for someone you can't have.

Excerpt
The door had just started to close behind them, so I almost missed her dad’s next words. Thank fuck I didn’t though.
“Besides which, I left Annora at the table when I saw you pull up,” he explained. “Poor girl probably thinks I’ve abandoned her, and she’s still too sore to move quickly enough to catch up to me.”
“Annora,” I whispered in wonder.
My brain was catching up to my wolf as I grabbed the door and swung it open to catch up to them only to stop dead in my tracks. The scent that drifted to me was sweeter than anything I’d ever smelled before. Like cotton candy on a hot summer’s day.
Breathing deeply, I zeroed in on the curvy brunette sitting in the corner booth. She really was here. My mate.

{Review}

A quick read with great pacing that is full of steam, action, fated love, families - good and bad, and a happily ever after that will make you smile.

Annora has grown up in a wolf pack where she feels like an outsider, she's quiet and reserved, and on her eighteenth birthday she finds out why she's different: she's a bear. Things go downhill from there. Her 'father' goes from horrid to despicable when he decides to get rid of her. But she's a survivor. With help from her rescuer Elias she makes her was to the Black River pack where she finds not only her mate, the fabulous Parker, but her confidence and a place in a pack that treats her like family. I liked that in the end she was able to stand up for herself, to take a stand. I was cheering for her.

Parker is a good guy with an admitted white knight complex. He's devoted and loving with the ability to kick some ass. He's spent his life waiting for Annora and when he finally meet her he's wonderful with her, showing her how she deserves to be treated. Their connection is quickly forged - something I love about shifters - it's 'mine' at first sight and then things get steamy. As easy as it was to fall for each other they're not out of trouble, the psychotic wolf that's after Annora hasn't given up and there's another huge surprise in store for Annora.

Grace is a smart fighter. Determined to escape an abusive relationship she figured out how to use her boyfriend's power against him. On the run, she ends up in Wolf Point, working at a bar owned by Hunter Tate. Hunter is an alpha in all ways, he's protective, dominating, decisive yet gentle with Grace. He'd do anything to keep her safe. I liked Grace and Hunter together - it was sweet that he called her Grace-mine - I thought they fit well together, complemented each other and had great chemistry.
The first book in the Black River Pack series also introduces us to enforcer and beta Spencer, the middle Tate, and white knight Parker, the youngest of the Tate brothers, whose books follow. What you see of Spencer and Parker will definitely make you want to read about them too.

Shoot for the Moon (Black River Pack #2)

Shoot for the Moon (Black River Pack #2) by

Eliza Reve knows that her ability to dream of future events sets her apart from others. Her gift became a curse when she wasn't able to save her mother or the alpha's son and she found herself exiled - a lone wolf. When she joins the Black River Pack, Eliza vows never to reveal her talent to anyone. Not even the man who has walked in her dreams for years.

Spencer Tate is her mate, but her visions have told her that he will renounce her. When he doesn't recognize her as his mate, she agrees to the no-strings-attached affair he offers because she thinks it's the most she can hope for. Although her heart breaks as she falls deeper in love with him, she wants to spend as many days with Spencer as possible before he kicks her out of his life.

When Spencer finally comes to his senses, he has his work cut out for him to convince Eliza that he wants her forever. When another she-wolf insists she's his mate instead, things get even more complicated. But Spencer isn't the alpha's second and enforcer because he isn't willing to fight for what's his, and he refuses to settle for anything less than Eliza as his marked and claimed mate.

This is book two in the Black River Pack series. Each novella will feature a different couple.

Eliza learned early on the consequences of her gift and it's led her to make hard and lonely choices, including keeping away from her mate. Although her actions are understandable I was glad that she grew in the story, realizing that she had power over her life instead of laying down and taking it.
I was a little off put by Spencer because he had his mate in his bed and didn't realize it - the whole 'mine' thing is one of the reasons I like shifters so much - though I appreciated how he reacted to his mistake, especially the patience he showed. He made a huge, huge mistake and once he realized it he owns up to it and does he best to repair the damage he did, showing her his love and trust and trying to earn the same from her.
A favorite quote:
"You've given me the moon," I whispered as my eyes drifted closed.
"What do you mean, dream girl?"
"Don't have to settle for just the stars with you, I tried to explain." (loc 1217)

The Guest Post

SOME RULES OF THE ROAD

Like Lucy Sommersworth, the heroine of Love, Lucy, my parents gave me the gift of a lifetime: a backpacking trip to Europe. I was a bit older than Lucy—22, and just out of college—but when I arrived in Milan, Italy with a Eurail pass, a copy of Let’s Go: Europe, and a seventy-pound backpack I could barely lift, I was a wee bit terrified. Like Lucy, I spoke only a little bit of Italian, just barely enough to get by, and I wasn’t particularly good at reading maps or train schedules. Unlike Lucy, I was travelling solo.

Luckily, my journey began with training wheels. I’d just taken a college Italian class, and my professor had offered a safe crash pad for the first few days of my trip—in her family home in the Alps. Less luckily, when I reached Malpensa airport, nobody was there to pick me up. Giddy with excitement and jet lag, I wandered around the airport, eavesdropping on Italians as they hugged each other hello and goodbye, and had noisy arguments. I’d never felt more alone in my life. Where would I sleep that night if my ride didn’t show up?

Luckily, my professor’s brother arrived at last to whisk me away to the family home in Domodossola. The extended family welcomed and fed me, gave me tours of their city with its charming medieval center, helped me practice my Italian, and, when the time was right, brought me to the train station where my solo travels began for real. It was time to take off the training wheels.

If I’d felt alone back in the airport, I was even more so on that train to Verona, a city where I didn’t know a soul. In those pre-internet days, I could disappear into thin air and nobody would even notice I was gone. The thought was chilling, but oddly exciting.

By nightfall, I’d made it to Verona. I’d figured out the public transportation, found a youth hostel, and booked myself a bed. Best of all, I had introduced myself to a handful of other backpackers. We hung out together in the hostel’s common area, sharing bread and cheese, exchanging stories, discussing the rules of the road—those bits of practical wisdom our travels were teaching us. Here are a few.

Time passes differently on the road.  Spend a few very intense hours seeing the sites with strangers and by the end of the day, those strangers have become a part of your story. Years later you’ll see their faces in your photo album and still remember stray details of the adventures you shared together, even if you can’t quite recall their names.

Spontaneity is key.  There are few things as magical as showing up at a train station with no idea where you’re headed next, picking a random train, and hopping on.

Janis Joplin said it best: Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.  When you’re carrying all your possessions on your back in a city where you don’t know a soul, you’re absolutely free. You can go anywhere, do anything. That freedom has its lonely moments—but it can be the doorway to all kinds of adventures.

Embrace misadventure.  As carefully as you plan there will be crazy mistakes: wrong turns, slept-through train stops, multilingual misunderstandings, and all kinds of other blunders—and these will make the best stories. My misadventures are some of my favorite memories. The time I missed curfew and had to climb into my hostel through a second-story window. The morning when, hanging out my recently washed clothes to dry, I dropped my wet underthings out the window, onto a stranger’s head. The night when, with no room to stay in, I slept on Venice’s train station steps with about a hundred other backpackers, the stars above us and the Grand Canal stretched out before us.

Would I trade that last memory for a safe, comfy night in an actual bed?  Not on your life.
