{Romance Review} On the Surface (In the Zone #1) by Kate Willoughby
{Romance Review} On the Surface (In the Zone #1) by Kate Willoughby
NHL player Tim Hollander lost his temper one time and threw a water bottle at an abusive fan. After "Bottlegate," he's traded to the San Diego Barracudas, where he'll need to keep the bad publicity to a minimum while proving he can still compete with the younger guys on the ice.
Erin Collier is a pediatric nurse who's never seen a hockey game, but gets in line for Tim's autograph at a PR event in hopes of impressing the doctor she has a crush on. When an obnoxious fan gets pushy toward Erin, Tim rushes to defend the pretty stranger, throwing a punch in the process.
Grateful for the rescue, Erin agrees to stand by Tim during the resulting press conference and host him at a hospital charity event. Their chemistry is palpable, and soon their lives are intertwined. But Erin doubts a hockey player is capable of anything resembling a real relationship. And if Tim can't get her to see beyond what's on the surface, they'll never last longer than a single season… (Blurb via Goodreads)

The storyline was fun and flirty with the real ups and downs of life, of career changes and challenges, of how the pain from past relationships impacts the present. I liked that their relationship felt real, they disagreed, they talked, they resolved things like adults. And the ending? Perfect.
I even liked the stuff about hockey - and I'm not a fan of sports - because Willoughby brought us the excitement of the sport and the real commitment the sport requires from the athletes. I look forward to reading other books in the In the Zone series.

"How old were you when you lost your virginity?" (page 1, line 1)Fun and sexy and romantic. I liked Erin. She's a girl who is compassionate, sweet, and caring but she is also fierce and protects those she cares about with all that she has. I thought Tim was great, he's kind and honorable and has a great sense of humor. And I liked them together.

left her in his will: his wedding chapel on the Las Vegas strip.
Whatever happened to gold watches, savings bonds, or some normal
inheritance?
And then there's Grandpa's letter. Not only is Holly running the business with her recently divorced parents, but she needs to make some serious money—fast. Grandpa also insists Holly reach out to Dax, the grandson of her family's mortal enemy and owner of the cheesy chapel next door. "Inheritance. I hate that word. Translation: Sorry someone you loved kicked the bucket; now here's your present. It's like getting hit by a car, only to make a fortune in the lawsuit. People constantly remind you what a financial blessing that accident was, such a sweet silver lining, when the truth is, you still got hit by a car."

Grooming
the Player & Hiring the Player
Campus
Players Series Books 1 & 2
By: Allie K. Adams
Don't hate the player...
Bainbridge
University sophomore, Emma Rae, embraces her title of perpetually single. All
the guys at BU are total players, and if there's one thing Emma hates more than
anything, it's a player.
Learn to play the game...
Ryan is
tired of being the embarrassment of his frat house. Being a Delta means he
should be playing the field, a different girl every night, just like the rest
of his frat brothers. But he's the king of nerds, as they constantly remind
him, and has never even had a real girlfriend. Hell, he isn't even allowed to
live in the Delta house, instead living in a mod behind it.
He begs
Emma to turn him into a player. In return he'll bring her to the Delta
DASH--the party of the year. As an underclassman, Emma isn't allowed to the
DASH without a Delta escort. She quickly agrees, knowing she can turn him into
anything, as she's done with so many of the ghosts of boyfriends past.
She updates
his image, teaches him how to flirt, how to kiss, and even how to drive a girl
wild with his heated touch. She's groomed Ryan into the ultimate player, which
is exactly what he wants.
The problem
is she turns him into exactly what she wants too and must now decide whether
this Project Em's Way is her greatest creation... Or her ultimate downfall.

Emma is forthright - she'll say anything - she's strong and vulnerable, confident and terrified, pragmatic and hopeful, and she's hopeless with computer passwords and intimidated by eggs. I loved Ryan. Smart and brave and sweet and a gentleman and the way he sees Emma, looks at her, the things he says to her? Swoon. I enjoyed them together. Though Emma thinks Ryan needs to be groomed, both Emma and Ryan have lessons to learn, what really matters, who matters, who they really are.
It's a fun story but it's also a very sexy story. Sexy with a good amount of awkward - I won't spoil that part but it had me laughing and cringing and rooting for them to get it right.

"So he says, 'We need to talk'." (page 1, line 1)Grooming the Player was full of awkward and embarrassment, of sweet and tender moments, and had me laughing out loud. I loved the characters and the vibe of college, of the stupid and insane things you do.

I adored Jake. He's a firefighter. He's protective - wait until you read why he lives where he lives - he can cook, he's a hero, he's a player. Or he was. He has fallen hard for Kayla, a stubborn, control freak who fights him every step of the way. Kayla was more difficult to like, she's rigid and regimented but she has a good heart and though it takes awhile - a long while - we get to see who she really is.
I liked Jake and Kayla together. Not only can they not keep their hands off of each other they are good for each other, the rule maker and the rule breaker.
I loved Kayla's friends, crazy, daring, and supportive, more like sisters than friends. I so want to read their stories. Emma and Ryan also show up, not that you need to read their story, Grooming the Player first, but you'll fall even more in love with Ryan in 'Hiring'. As much as I enjoyed seeing them again Adams scared me with what happened; I swear that if things had gone differently I would have stomped on my kindle.

cannot resist...
Capturing the Earl’s Love Excerpt
Lord Rupert Stanforth, Earl of Morton, watched his sister, Rowena, approach. She was smiling, and her friend, Meredith Divine, clung to her arm. His gaze briefly passed over the other girl. He was increasingly convinced Miss Divine only kept Rowena as a friend because Rowena was the perfect foil to show off Miss Divine’s more striking looks. Her auburn curls glowed in the candlelight beside Rowena’s lacklustre, light-brown locks. Miss Divine was also slightly taller, and a little fuller in the bust. While they crossed the room, she appeared to press as close as she could to Rowena’s side, letting Rowena’s less impressionable looks make Miss Divine’s stand out among the white-clad debutantes in the ballroom. “Rupert...” His eyes focused on his sister once more. She was out of breath, having just completed a country dance, and her cheeks were flushed, while her eyes glowed, expressing the fun she was having. “I want to introduce Meredith to Ellen. Will you escort us and do the honours? Meredith is dying to meet her.” Mmm, now what is this little game? He glanced at Miss Divine only to receive a very bright but subtly restrained smile. She was trying to win his approval. He was not interested. He wished nothing to do with the little schemer. Her father was in some sort of trade. Rupert had not even wished Rowena to befriend Miss Divine, let alone become so thick with her. The two of them were inseparable; or rather, Miss Divine hung about Rowena like a moth around a flame. Except Miss Divine was no moth. Her beauty was far too vibrant. Rupert was Rowena’s guardian. Their father had passed on long ago, so Rupert was responsible for keeping his sister safe. It fell to him to help her choose her friends wisely. Yet the more he disparaged Miss Divine, the more Rowena favoured the girl. He’d ceased his complaints. Their friendship had still blossomed. He’d hoped it would wither and die back. It had not—yet. He expected Miss Divine to make a wrong step soon though, one which would open his sister’s eyes, and end this arm-in-arm behavior.FREE Novella

Excerpt:
Prologue
It
had seemed like a great idea eleven years ago, but, now, with Elder Eden
staring him down like he was a disobedient child, Christopher Sarian feared
that maybe it wasn’t as brilliant as he had originally thought. Her aqua eyes
bore into his and he shifted in his seat, uncomfortable with the situation he
had put himself in.
Her voice was silky smooth and strong, even in her old age. It also had a slight hiss to it when she was angered. That hiss seeped through in her words to Christopher. “No one will accept her here; her kind is not welcome by others. You can try to win my approval all you want, but the others will make her miserable. Is that really the best for the child?”
“She will be seventeen, you know.” In comparison to the Elder’s, his voice was small and quiet.
“I do know, Christopher, and I know that her presence would bring unrest to our already shaky colony.” Her wrinkled and dainty hands rested softly on the large oak table that was usually occupied by the Elders of the area. Now it was just her and him and the uneasy air between them.
He cleared his throat a little. He was usually so sure of himself and his power over everyone, but now he was reminded that the Elders would always be the ones in charge no matter who had the crown. But that had its upsides; they were a great source of advice and information. They hadn’t failed him yet. “I haven’t seen her for eleven years, Eden. She’ll be an adult soon and she’ll leave me behind forever. I want to see her, and claim her as my daughter, for one last time before then.”
Eden sighed and took a seat in her usual high back chair. She rubbed her temples in slow circles and then lifted her eyes to the man she had watched grow over the years. When Christopher had been crowned, she had kept a business relationship between them, calling him by his title and expecting the same back. But they were far more than that, they were family though not by blood. “Fine. You are my Lord after all. But if anything goes awry during her time here,” she threatened.
“Everything will go perfectly, I promise.”
She pointed a firm finger at him accusingly, but a faint smile crossed her full lips. “We’ll see about that, young man!”

Brandi lives in central Pennsylvania with her fur-ball cats (Onyx and Klepto), where she spends most of her time attached to her laptops, reading books, appeasing her sweet tooth, and watching TV for motivation.
Growing up in a haunted house inspired Brandi’s fascination with the paranormal, so it only made sense that she’d write Urban Fantasy books for both teens and adults.
Brandi hasn’t been lucky enough to meet her soul mate (yet), so she writes paranormal tales of those who have. Her stories combine magical elements with real-life issues, strong female characters, semi-old fashioned men and family values, woven together and told from an emotional, first-person perspective. She enjoys writing sweet stories that teach girls it’s okay to speak your mind and be independent, career-driven, and not worry about fitting in to society’s mold.
In addition to the BirthRight Novels, she also has four additional adventures she’ll be writing over the next few years, so stay-tuned.

talk about how we ended up with the cover for Don’t Fall.
First
of all, covers are one of the best parts of being published. For real. Getting
to see something beautiful that captures the mood of your story, and has your
name on it, is pretty great.
For
Don’t Fall, Georgia McBride and I decided to do a cover contest. The entries
came to me first and it was so much fun seeing them come in. There were a lot
of beautiful ones. A lot of very creative, unique ones. And a few odd ball
ones. Lol.
From
there Georgia, and Mandy, my editor, and I all picked our own favorites and
eventually narrowed it down to the top three. This was not easy! Then those
three covers all got splashed all over the blogosphere and people voted. I
honestly really liked all three covers, and didn’t try to influence the voters,
but this cover was my favorite.
I
loved it the first time I saw it in my inbox, and I’m glad the voters agreed! I
see this as Anya letting go of her fears, her restrictions, the burdens she’s
put on herself. It’s a beautiful, free falling sort of moment.
